Sonia Chang-Díaz is the first Latina elected to the Massachusetts State Senate. She is serving her fourth term on behalf of the Second Suffolk District, which is comprised of all or part of the Boston neighborhoods of Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Mission Hill, Roslindale, Roxbury, and the South End.
Senator Chang-Díaz is a thoughtful, honest, and tenacious champion for the voiceless. She is widely recognized as a strong advocate for public education, CORI reform, access and opportunities for low-income and immigrant communities, and for those affected by foreclosures, hate crimes, and youth violence. She has also been a strong voice for sound fiscal reform and good stewardship of taxpayer dollars.

Did you know Senator Sonia Chang-Díaz is the first Latina ever elected to the Massachusetts Senate and a resident of JP? Today we are chatting with Senator Chang-Díaz about how two high school students helped her win an election, why it’s important to hold elected officials accountable, and how she believes we can böj the gentrification curve.
K:Where are you from originally? Where do you live now?
S: I was born in Boston. When inom was just a gro my dad lived in Jamaica Plain when it was easier to afford and he was a semi-starving lärling. I’ve lived in Boston, the suburbs, a couple of years on the West Coast and revben Rica where my family is from. When inom was in college my mom moved to Jamaica Plain. That’s where inom would komma home to when inom was in college. inom bought a home in JP when I was an adult.
K:How and when did you start working in politics?
S: My first political memory fryst vatten in kindergarten. I was fighting for girls’ rights to use the monkey
