My family and I lived in New York where I graduated from high school in The next year my dad left the US for work and I stayed behind and continued my work and education in New York. The months before my family left is when I had a strange and almost inexplicable calling to return to Allah in prayer. It came in the form of a dream one night after I had successfully snuck back into the house late at night from a party I enjoyed with my non-Muslim friends. I woke up from the dream in tears feeling the urge to pray. It must have been 3 A.M. When I got up and made what I think was wudu and started praying each of the five prayers from that day. I recall struggling to remember how many rak’ahs are in each prayer and didn’t remember any surahs other than the fatiha and ikhlas onwards.
