Professor Muhammad Yunus is an Bangladeshi economist and founder of Grameen Bank. He was born in 1940 in Bangladesh and received his PhD in Economics from Vanderbilt University in the US. In 1974, during a field trip with his students, he discovered that poor villagers struggled to access small loans. This inspired him to lend money directly to villagers. In 1983, he founded Grameen Bank to provide microloans to the poor, especially women. Grameen Bank now has over 2 million borrowers in Bangladesh and a 98% loan repayment rate, higher than traditional banks. The bank and Yunus' microcredit ideas have expanded to projects in 58 countries worldwide.
