New study reveals some whales can live up to 150 years, shattering old life expectancy predictions
Some whales are living over 100 years, an age surpassing previously estimated life expectancies, according to new research. A recent study published in Science Advances concluded that many great whale species have an "unrecognized potential for great longevity" that had been masked by the demographic disruptions caused by industrial whaling.
More precisely, scientists researching the southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) discovered that their median lifetime was 73.4 years, with 10% of them living much longer than 131.8 years. Such a lifetime is significantly more than it had been previously estimated for the species to be around 70 years long. The scientists relied on decades of photo records and statistical methods used in life insurance companies to approximate the whales' lifespan, something difficult to determine until now.
