This social studies lesson plan aims to teach 10th grade history students about varying historical perspectives of Christopher Columbus. Students will first be introduced to the traditional narrative of Columbus and then analyze more critical sources that problematize this view. They will compare accounts of Columbus from Washington Irving, Samuel Eliot Morrison, and Kirkpatrick Sale in small groups. Formative assessments during class discussion and a summative exit ticket will evaluate if students learned about the differing depictions of Columbus in historiography.
