Silas Hubbard born in Chautauqua County, the youngest of nine surviving children, when his mother was 49 years of age. The Hubbards had come to Massachusetts from England early in the 17th century. His father died when Silas was two years of age. Silas attended a Methodist boarding school in Lima, N.Y., and The Academy at East Aurora. In he went to Allegheny College at Meadville, PA. He received his medical diploma from Castleton, Vermont.
Juliana Frances Reed was born in N.Y.C. and came to Buffalo by canal boat when three years of age. Her father was of Irish ancestry and came from Pennsylvania. Juliana, according to Mary Hubbard Heath, "was a creature of moods which varied from profound melancholy to exalted gaiety all of her life - both Irish and Puritan.
Juliana and Silas were married in Buffalo where Dr. Silas was practicing medicine. He was 28 and she They had known one another for quite a few years.

The life of Elbert Hubbard began in Bloomington, Illinois, where he was born to Silas Hubbard and Juliana Frances Read. He grew up in Hudson, Illinois, where his first business venture was selling Larkin soap products, a career which eventually brought him to Buffalo, New York. His innovations for Larkin included premiums and "leave on trial". His best-known work came after he founded Roycroft, an Arts and Crafts movement community in East Aurora, New York in This grew from his private press, the Roycroft Press, which was inspired by William Morris's Kelmscott Press. Although called the "Roycroft Press" by latter-day collectors and print historians, the organization called itself "The Roycrofters" and "The Roycroft Shops".Hubbard edited and published two magazines, The Philistine and The Fra. Born in Bloomington, Illinois, in , Elbert Hubbard was the son of a country doctor who never made more that $ per year. The family had settled in Buffalo as early as but moved west during the cholera epidemic of that year.
A born salesman, Hubbard's first full-time job was selling soap door-to-door. Later he joined the J.D. Larkin Company of Buffalo, one of the most successful mail order houses in the country. It was Hubbard who introduced premium merchandise as an added inducement to buy his company's products. He also instituted the club plan which made every customer a potential salesman.
But something was missing. Secretly Hubbard had written a novel and the prospect of a literary career fascinated him. In he sold his interest in the Larkin Company for $75, and retired at the age of thirty-six.
Hubbard began his intellectual quest by enrolling at Harvard, but he resigned after being told that he lacked the basic requirements to achieve a degree in letters.
