Seeing as both memoirs and autobiographies have been used interchangeably, it is important that we add substance to the memoir vs autobiography debate. An autobiography or memoir are both personal accounts of one's life.
But, what is the difference between memoir and autobiography? Well, they differ in their focus, scope, and style of storytelling.
A memoir is a narrative that focuses on a specific period, event, or theme in the author's life. It often includes reflections, thoughts, and emotions related to that period or event. Memoirs can be written by anyone, regardless of their public profile or achievements.
An autobiography, on the other hand, is a comprehensive account of the author's entire life from birth to the present. Autobiographies typically cover a wider range of topics and periods in the author's life , and tend to be more structured and chronological.

Recently my sister asked me to explain the difference between memoir and autobiography.
She’d been disappointed, she said, reading Elizabeth Jane Howard’s memoir Slipstream. She’d just finished the Cazalet Chronicle, Howard’s five volume novel series following three generations of a English family in the post-war years, and she wanted more. So she picked up Slipstream, only to find whole sections of Cazalet repeated in the book as if they really happened. She was confused. Was Cazalet fiction or was it fact? Was Slipstream an autobiography, or what was it?
I’ve not read either the Cazalet Chronicle or Slipstream, but that wasn’t going to stop me generalising. Besides, my sister rarely asks my advice about literature so I thought I ought to man a particular effort.

Memoir vs. Autobiography: What’s the Difference?
They say everyone has a story to tell, and I absolutely believe that. But some folks have a story to tell about their own lives. They’ve experienced things and learned lessons that are worth sharing with other people.
That’s pretty freaking cool.
When you want to tell a personal narrative, you have a few options: a blog, a YouTube channel, even a diary. But if you want to turn it into a book, you have two options to consider:
