    On 14 August 1958, Emmanuelle Riva boarded flight 270 to Tokyo. After two days spent travelling, punctuated by a stopover in Alaska, the actress set foot in Japan for the first time. 

    She stayed there for a fortnight to spelfilm the Japanese scenes of Alain Resnais’ first feature film, Hiroshima mon amour, the spelfilm adaptation of the novel of the same name by Marguerite Duras, in which she played the female protagonist.

    The actress, accompanied by script writer Sylvette Baudrot, bought herself a Ricohflex in Tokyo before leaving for Hiroshima. She was therefore able to capture moments of everyday life in Japan throughout her journey, notably in the peripheral districts of Hiroshima, ten years after the bombings.

    Biography: life and films

    Although first and foremost a stage actress, Emmanuelle Riva achieved worldwide renown at the start and end of her career in film roles that marked her out as one of the most remarkable performers of her generation. Half a century separates these two films, one dealing with the collective guilt of the Hiroshima bombing, the other with the traumas of growing old and dying. Between these two exceptional films, Riva's cinema career is pretty obscure and her talents were far better used on the stage. Originally named Paulette Riva, she was born in Cheniménil, Vosges, France on 24th February 1927. She came from a humble background, her family being descended from Italian immigrants. Her parents wanted her to pursue a respectable profession as a dressmaker, but she had other ideas.     Emmanuelle Riva (French pronunciation:[ɛmanɥɛlʁiva]; 24 February 1927 – 27 January 2017) was a French actress, best known for her roles in the films Hiroshima mon amour (1959) and Amour (2012).

    Riva was nominated for a BAFTA Award for her role in Hiroshima mon amour, and won Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival for Thérèse Desqueyroux (1962). For her lead role in Michael Haneke's Amour, she won a BAFTA Award and the César Award, and was nominated for an Academy Award.
