Roy Fox Lichtenstein[2] (; October 27, &#;– September 29, ) was an American pop artist. He rose to prominence in the s through pieces which were inspired by popular advertising and the comic book style. Much of his work explores the relationship between fine art, advertising, and consumerism.

Lichtenstein's paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City, which represented him from onwards. His artwork was considered to be "disruptive".[5] Lichtenstein described pop art as "not 'American' painting but actually industrial painting".[6]

He was born in New York, the son of a real estate agent and homemaker, and was part of a generation whose ung adulthood experiences were defined by World War II. He studied with artist Reginald marsch at the Art Students League and went on to attend and man art at Ohio State University. His academic life at OSU was interrupted by the war and service in the infantry.
