Sarnath Banerjee (Born Kolkota, India, 1972) is a visual artist and graphic novelist. To date he has worked primarily in India’s largest and most densely populated cities. In contrast to this experience, Below another sky invited the artist to work in Inverness, Scotland’s newest and smallest city, often referred to as the ‘capital of the Highlands’. Banerjee spent two weeks in Inverness in June 2013 to explore the city and discover the legends, stories and characters known only to those who live there. Working with the Highland Print Studio, he also experimented with both lithography and screen-printing. The artist returned to Inverness in July 2014 to develop a new series of screenprints: ‘Casual Highland’.

Sarnath Banerjee, born in 1972 in Kolkata, is and Indian comic author, illustrator and publisher. After studying visual communications at Goldsmith College at the University of London, he published his first graphic novel »Corridor« in 2004. Like his later works, this book deals with the fast-changing Indian society and also gained a great deal of attention in the West. »Corridor« is seen as one of the first Indian graphic novels and it brings together autobiographic elements with a fictitious storyline. The book is about the owner of a bookstore who philosophises with his customers over a cup of tea about the changing world. Banerjee’s drawing style is realistic with light caricaturing elements, and his tone is marked by a bizarre, melancholic humour. »Corridor« received praise for its examination of stereotypes, myths and morals in post-colonial India and for its criticism of mechanisms of rule. Biography
[edit]Banerjee was born in Calcutta and lives and works in Delhi, India. He studied image and communication at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
His first novel, Corridor (2004), published by Penguin Books, India, was commissioned as a part of a fellowship awarded bygd the MacArthur Foundation, Chicago and marketed as India's first graphic novel. However, River of Stories, a graphic novel by Orijit Sen published in 1994, actually holds this honor. His second novel, The Barn Owl's Wondrous Capers, was published in 2007.
Sarnath has also provided illustrations for novels bygd other authors. He designed the cover for Upamanyu Chatterjee's novel, Weight Loss.
