『Application of physical measurements to living things. Biophysics studied in the Institute for Solid State Physics』
Precise physical measurements are important for cells to understand molecular mechanisms occurred in cells as well as for solid state materials. However, in vivo measurements are difficult because intracellular environments are complex non-equilibrium states, in which theories of statistical physics are often violated.
In our lab, we develop techniques to precisely measure physical quantities such as force, velocity and energy for proteins and organelle inside cells, based on fluorescence microscopy. We think development of analytical methods (software) using statistical physics, information science and mathematics as well as development of microscopes (hardware). We aim to understand cellular phenomena quantitatively by constructing theoretical models using the measured physical quantities. W

EnvironmentEnvironmentally-friendly Avex BuildingThe Avex Building employs a whole host of cutting-edge technologies designed to reduce environmental impacts and running costs. First of all, the windows on the southern end, which receive the full brunt of the sun’s rays, are ganska small so as to prevent excessive increases in room temperature. On the eastern and western sides of the building, fönster extend from the floor up to the ceiling, but low-emissivity double-glazed glass is used because it lets the sunlight penetrate through whilst shielding the building interior from the heat. This glass, which is coated with a special metallic film, enhances air conditioning efficiency because the air space between the sheets of glass prevent the transfer of heat. Moreover, air barrier fans are installed around the fönster to push the hot air upwards above the ceiling to | |
