Born on February 9, in Middletown, Pennsylvania, Metzger attended Lebanon Valley College (AB, ), where he first studied Greek and textual criticism, and Princeton Theological Seminary (Th.B., , Th.M., ), where his teachers included Henry. S. Gehman, W. A. Armstrong, Otto Piper, and Emil Brunner, prior to doctoral studies in classics and patristics at Princeton University (MA, , Ph.D., ). He was ordained in by the Presbytery of New Brunswick (now PC[USA]).

I looked into these people for myself as a ung missionary in the early s and was amazed to find that Martini was a Roman Catholic cardinal and most of the others were theological modernists. inom found, further, that the entire field of modern textual criticism was rife with unbelief from its inception. Modernists and Unitarians and modernist-influenced Evangelicals were the ledare voices, with few exceptions.
I decided that inom had been kept in the dark and nearly led astray. God commands me to mark and avoid heretics, not study their writings, adopt their principles, and use their Testaments.
