St Gerard's Church
St. Gerard’s Church1
In 1960 Cardinal Richard Cushing established five (5) new parishes in the Boston Archdiocese, including Canton, splitting the St. John Parish in two parts. This division was driven by the fact that St. John’s Church had grown 250% since the conclusion of the Second World War. The St. Gerard Church was built on Washington Street in an area once occupied by the Carroll Tavern. Leo J. McCann was appointed the parish's first pastor and while the church was constructed services were held in the Ponkapoag Civic Center and McCunn resided in the St. John Rectory. The St. Gerard’s Church was designed by Lawrence J. Cuneo and consecrated on February 9, 1962. In 1988 the church underwent a renovation.

Final Masses will be said at St. Gerard’s during the last weekend of September. All parish activities will shift to a single location on October 1.
